In the product configuration world it’s all about the power of the engine and the flexibility of the modeling tools to handle the toughest requirements.  Dr. Sanjay Mittal, Selectica’s founder knew this when he founded the company.  SaaS vendors can’t do it, ERP vendors can’t do it. The SaaS vendors know this high end is not their market but hope to hook you into a 2-3 year contract before you get enough products loaded in that you ever realize there is a problem. SaaS is cheap and SaaS is easy but then so are the problems they solve. ERP vendors have not mastered this science either. Do they have configurators? Yes.
